Not too long ago, I had to have an emergency Appendectomy – and I was so unprepared! I promised myself to order these things to have on hand! I’ve since created my “Emergency Kit” so I have what’s needed in…well an emergency!
1) ROPE – You don’t realize the amount of core strength you need to just get out of bed – until you don’t have any! By tying a rope to the foot of my bed, I was able to pull myself up to get out of bed with more ease and less pain! A rope can be used in many emergency situations – keyword “emergency” as there are products that can be bought that are specifically made for different things. For instance, a piece of rope can be used as a temporary gait belt. It wouldn’t be very comfortable long term, but can definitely be used until you get the real thing!

Vive Bed Ladder
COW&COW Transfer Belt
2) ICE PACKS – So easy to keep the reusable gel packs in the freezer, yet I never seem to have them ready when I need them! Be sure to wrap them in something. I like using a large sock or a pillowcase.
Disposable Ice Packs
Reusable Ice Packs
3) PLASTIC FOLDING CHAIR – A folding chair comes in handy for many reasons. This folding chair is lightweight and can be washed easily. When not needed, it’s easy to store. My Aunt Halgerd kept a folding chair in the back of her car in case she ever fell. She used it to help get off the ground and seated to catch her breath. When you are weak from illness, having a place to sit to take a break – or to get dressed – is a “life changer”. I actually purchased this chair from Walmart and used it as my mom’s shower seat. It worked perfectly! If you click on the picture, it will take you to the Walmart website.
Let’s face it. When you are not feeling well, taking a shower can drain every ounce of energy you have! These next two items, can help you feel clean when a shower is the last thing you want to do!
4) NO WATER SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONING CAP
5) BATHING WIPES
And FINALLY…
6) Pillows, Pillows, PILLOWS – If you’re hurt – or had surgery – you will want to immobilize your body as much as possible. A simple move in the middle of the night, can cause excruciating pain!
I love having a couple good body pillows on hand for an emergency! Here’s a good option! Also, I recently bought these bags to put my pillows in. It sure helped in storing the pillows for when they are needed!
